The proposed metro line connecting Bengaluru and Hosur is making progress as officials from Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) recently visited Bengaluru to discuss the feasibility of the inter-state project. This development marks the first step toward establishing South India’s inaugural inter-state metro connection, aimed at improving public transportation between the tech capital and its neighboring Tamil Nadu city.
According to a report by Money Control, the metro line is planned to span 23 kilometers, with 12 kilometers falling within Karnataka and 11 kilometers within Tamil Nadu. The route will feature a total of 12 metro stations, enhancing connectivity between Bengaluru’s Bommasandra and Hosur. The Detailed Feasibility Study Report (DFR) for the project is nearing completion, providing insights into the challenges and requirements for successful implementation.
The project gained traction in 2022 when the then Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai’s government approved the extension of the RV Road – Bommasandra line to Hosur City, as part of Namma Metro’s Phase 2 expansion. However, despite the state government’s approval, construction work has not yet commenced. To move forward, authorities from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have been collaborating to ensure mutual cooperation for the project.
The new metro line is anticipated to significantly benefit the large number of tech professionals commuting between Electronic City and Hosur, as the latter offers a more affordable cost of living. The enhanced public transportation system is expected to ease daily commutes and potentially increase migration to Hosur due to improved connectivity.
As the project advances, stakeholders are hopeful that it will pave the way for a more efficient and integrated transportation network in South India, setting a precedent for future inter-state metro ventures.
