27 Killed in Rajkot Fire Tragedy: HM Holds Meeting; Town Planners, Fire Officer Sent to 12-Day Remand

At least 27 people, including four children, lost their lives in a tragic fire incident at the TRP Game Zone in Rajkot, Gujarat. In response to this devastating event, Union Home Minister Amit Shah convened a meeting with senior civic and police officials to discuss the aftermath and the actions taken following the incident.

During his visit to Rajkot International Airport, Shah reviewed the measures taken by authorities in response to the fire tragedy. Among those present at the meeting were Rajkot Municipal Commissioner DP Desai, Police Commissioner Brajesh Kumar Jha, and District Collector Prabhav Joshi.

The investigation into the fire incident led to the arrest of Town Planning Officer (TPO) Mansukh Sagathia, Assistant Town Planning Officers (ATPO) Mukesh Makwana and Gautam Joshi, and Fire Station Officer Rohit Vigora by the Rajkot Crime Branch. They were subsequently remanded to a 12-day custody by the court.

The police’s inquiry revealed that the TRP Game Zone operated without necessary safety equipment or clearance, leading to major safety lapses. The arrested RMC officials face charges of illegal omission, with their names being added to the original complaint.

Special Public Prosecutor Tushar Savani highlighted previous safety concerns, including a fire incident in 2023 at the same location due to welding activities. Despite the presence of a fire officer, no Fire No Objection Certificate (NOC) was obtained.

The tragic fire incident on May 25 exposed significant safety deficiencies, such as the absence of a fire NOC and emergency exits at the TRP Game Zone. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to delve into the matter further, questioning senior officials to ascertain accountability and improve safety protocols in such establishments.
