In a dramatic development amidst escalating political turmoil in Bangladesh, nearly 600 individuals attempted to cross into India through West Bengal but were halted by the Border Security Force (BSF). The group, which tried to enter India at the Dakshin Berubari village in Jalpaiguri district, expressed fears for their safety due to the ongoing unrest in their home country.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, just a day before an interim government was set to assume power in Bangladesh following the ouster and flight of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The political upheaval in Bangladesh has led to widespread violence and instability, prompting many to seek refuge across the border.
According to officials, the individuals who attempted to cross the border were pleading with BSF personnel to let them in, citing fears of being attacked and concerns for their lives. “They appealed to us and asked to be let into the country, saying that they were afraid of being attacked and also feared for their lives,” said a BSF official. Despite their pleas, the officials explained that it was not feasible to permit their entry in this manner.
Some members of the group dispersed after being denied entry, but many remained at the border point late into the evening, hoping for a change in their situation. Local residents reported that the individuals across the barbed wire were in distress, recounting their horrific experiences and pleading for assistance.
The unrest in Bangladesh has been simmering since before the January 7 elections, which saw Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League win in a landslide. The election was marred by allegations of irregularities and was widely criticized as being far from free and fair. Subsequent protests, triggered by a high court decision to reinstate a reservation quota for family members of war veterans, escalated into violent clashes between protesters and the police, resulting in over 100 deaths and numerous injuries.
The BSF has been on high alert since the political crisis intensified, particularly following the dramatic departure of Sheikh Hasina from the country. The situation at the border remains tense as officials continue to manage the influx of individuals seeking safety amid the ongoing crisis in Bangladesh.
