The Delhi government has officially implemented a complete ban on the use, manufacturing, storage, and sale of all types of firecrackers in an effort to combat air pollution during the winter months. This significant measure, which also includes restrictions on online delivery services for firecrackers, is part of the city’s 21-point Winter Action Plan for 2024.
The directive was issued on Monday by the Delhi Pollution Control Committee, emphasizing that the ban will remain in effect until January 1, 2025. The order mandates strict enforcement by the Delhi police, who are required to submit daily action reports to the committee regarding compliance with the ban.
Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai highlighted the importance of this initiative, stating that it is crucial to take proactive steps to reduce pollution levels, particularly as the city experiences a rise in air quality issues during the winter season. The government is particularly focused on addressing the impacts of stubble burning from neighboring states, which significantly contributes to the region’s air pollution crisis.
As part of the broader Winter Action Plan, the Delhi government is also set to employ drones for real-time monitoring of air quality across various pollution hotspots in the city. Additional measures include increased oversight of vehicle emissions, dust pollution, and industrial pollution, as well as exploring innovative solutions such as the potential for artificial rain to help clear the air.
On the same day the ban was announced, Delhi recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) reading of 220, categorizing the air quality as “poor” according to the Central Pollution Control Board. The AQI scale indicates that levels between zero and 50 are considered good, while readings between 201 and 300 are categorized as poor.
With the onset of winter and its accompanying air quality challenges, the Delhi government is urging residents to cooperate in mitigating pollution levels and is reinforcing its commitment to ensuring cleaner air for all citizens.
