India Finalizes Agreement with US for Acquisition of 31 Predator Drones

India Signs $4 Billion Deal with US for 31 Predator Drones

India has formalized a significant defense agreement with the United States, securing the procurement of 31 Predator drones from the American defense firm General Atomics. The deal, approved by the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) last week, was officially signed on Tuesday in a ceremony attended by high-ranking military and corporate officials from both nations.

Under the ₹32,000 crore (approximately $4 billion) agreement, the Indian Navy is set to receive 15 Sea Guardian drones, while the Indian Air Force and Army will each be allocated eight Sky Guardian drones. The contract also includes the establishment of a maintenance, repair, and overhaul facility in India, which aims to enhance local capabilities and support for these advanced unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

The signing of the deal marks a crucial milestone in India’s defense procurement strategy, with discussions between the two countries spanning several years. Recent progress was made following the clearance of final hurdles at a Defence Acquisition Council meeting held weeks prior to the signing.

The MQ-9B Predator drones, often referred to as “hunter-killer” UAVs, will significantly bolster India’s surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities, particularly along the disputed borders with China. The MQ-9B variant is known for its advanced technology and was previously utilized in high-profile operations, including the targeted strike that eliminated al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri in Kabul in July 2022.

With this acquisition, India is poised to enhance its military readiness and surveillance capabilities, as it navigates complex regional security dynamics.
