Manipur Extends Mobile Internet Ban in Nine Districts Amid Escalating Violence

The Manipur government has extended the suspension of mobile internet and mobile data services in nine districts for an additional two days, following ongoing ethnic strife and recent violent incidents. The ban, which now includes VSAT and VPN services, will remain in effect until 5:15 PM on November 27, as per an order issued by Home Department Commissioner N. Ashok Kumar.

The restrictions were initially imposed on November 16 in seven districts and later expanded to include Jiribam and Pherzawl. Authorities aim to curb the spread of inflammatory content and prevent further law and order issues.

    Escalation of Violence

Manipur has been grappling with ethnic tensions between the Meitei and Kuki communities since May 2023, which have resulted in over 258 deaths and the displacement of tens of thousands. The latest surge in violence was triggered by the recovery of the bodies of three women and three children, allegedly abducted from a relief camp in Jiribam by Kuki-Zo militants on November 11.

The abductions reportedly occurred during a confrontation between Kuki militants and security forces in Borobekra, which left 10 militants dead. The recovery of the bodies intensified public outrage, leading to widespread protests and acts of arson, including attacks on legislators’ residences in the Imphal Valley on November 16.

    Government Response

The home department reviewed the volatile situation and deemed it necessary to extend the internet suspension to maintain public order. The affected districts include Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching, Kangpokpi, Churachandpur, Jiribam, and Pherzawl.

The internet ban is part of a broader effort to contain misinformation and prevent the mobilization of mobs, which have exacerbated the violence in the region.

    Ethnic Strife in Manipur

Since the onset of ethnic clashes in May 2023, the state has faced persistent unrest. The ongoing conflict between the Meitei and Kuki communities has left a trail of destruction, with numerous lives lost, properties damaged, and thousands forced to seek refuge in relief camps.

The recent incidents underline the fragile state of peace in Manipur, with authorities grappling to restore normalcy. As the internet suspension continues, the government has called for calm and urged residents to cooperate in maintaining law and order.
