Mumbai police have registered an FIR against three unidentified individuals for allegedly threatening and extorting ₹10,000 from a first-year MBBS student of Sir JJ Hospital. The incident took place on March 5 in the Dongri area while the student was having dinner at a restaurant near his college, officials said.
Student Threatened and Forced to Transfer Money
According to the police, after finishing his meal, the student was approached by a man who aggressively questioned him. “Are you new to this area? What are you doing here? This is our area; don’t you recognize us?” the man asked. When the student failed to recognize him, he was taken to a nearby lane, where two more men joined in.
The trio then threatened the student, demanding all the money he had. When he stated that he had no cash, they forced him to call his father, who transferred ₹5,000 via PhonePe. To make up the remaining amount, the student borrowed another ₹5,000 from a friend. The accused then made him scan a QR code on their payment app and conducted four transactions totaling ₹10,000.
Police Investigation Underway
Following the ordeal, the student approached Dongri police and filed a complaint. Based on his statement, an FIR has been registered under sections 308(3), 308(2), and 3(5) of the Indian Penal Code. A police investigation is currently underway to identify and arrest the accused.
Similar Case in Gurugram
In a separate incident, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) last week arrested a Gurugram-based man for allegedly impersonating a senior ED officer and extorting money from people. Authorities have urged the public to report any such incidents to the police immediately.
