Rajasthan faced severe weather conditions on Saturday night as heavy rains combined with intense dust storms across multiple districts, leading to significant damage, power outages, and the tragic deaths of two people.
In Bhiwadi town of Khairthal-Tijara district, a woman and her daughter lost their lives when the wall of their house collapsed amid the heavy downpour. The town recorded 35 mm of rainfall, while other areas such as Jodhpur and Jaisalmer also experienced showers. Hanumangarh’s Nohar received the highest rainfall, followed closely by Pilani in Jhunjhunu with 49.8 mm and Sikar with 38 mm.
The storms brought high-speed winds that uprooted electric poles and trees, resulting in power outages across Bikaner, Sikar, and Jhunjhunu. Fortunately, power was restored quickly after the disruption. Barmer and Jaisalmer were blanketed with dust during the storm, drastically reducing visibility and making travel difficult. Similar conditions affected Ganganagar and Hanumangarh districts.
A local resident reported a sharp drop in temperature and poor visibility the following morning, highlighting the impact of the storm on daily life.
Adding to the weather woes, Rajasthan continues to endure extreme heat. Barmer recorded a scorching maximum temperature of 47.6 degrees Celsius on Saturday, exceeding the normal by 5.3 degrees. The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for intense heat in Jaisalmer, Barmer, and Bikaner, an orange alert for Jodhpur, and a yellow alert for Nagaur, Pali, Jalore, Bhilwara, and Chittorgarh districts.
Heatwave conditions are expected to persist in Rajasthan until May 27 and in the neighboring states of Punjab, Haryana, Jammu, and Kashmir until May 26, according to the weather department.
