IMD Sounds Red Alert in Southern and Western States Amid Forecast of Torrential Rains

Red Alert Issued in Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra as Monsoon Brings Extremely Heavy Rainfall: IMD

With the official onset of the southwest monsoon, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for several states, warning of extremely heavy rainfall in the coming days. The warning applies to Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Goa, and Maharashtra, signaling the possibility of severe weather events and urging residents and authorities to remain vigilant.

According to IMD’s multi-hazard forecast, very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is expected over Coastal and Interior Karnataka, Kerala and Mahe, Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal. The red alert was issued on Monday following the swift advancement of the monsoon, marking a highly active weather phase.

Mumbai witnessed torrential downpours, leading to waterlogging and significant disruptions. Notably, this year’s rain marked the earliest monsoon onset in the city in 75 years, highlighting the intensity of this season’s rainfall pattern.

    Orange Alerts Across Other States

In addition to the red alert zones, the IMD has sounded orange alerts—indicating heavy rainfall that could impact daily life—for Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and parts of Gujarat.

In Odisha, district collectors have been cautioned regarding adverse weather due to the development of a low-pressure area over the Northwest Bay of Bengal off the Odisha coast. The IMD stated that this system is expected to intensify in the next 48 hours, potentially worsening weather conditions.

Ahmedabad, Gujarat’s capital, received welcome showers on Tuesday, providing relief from the scorching heat that gripped the region.

Thunderstorms and Hailstorm Alerts in the North

The IMD has also forecast isolated hailstorms over Himachal Pradesh, along with thunderstorms and strong winds in parts of Delhi, Chandigarh, and Haryana. These conditions could pose risks to life and property, particularly in vulnerable areas.

    Precautionary Measures Advised

The weather department has urged local administrations and disaster management authorities in the affected states to take precautionary steps. Citizens are advised to avoid low-lying areas, stay indoors during heavy showers, and follow official weather advisories.

As monsoon conditions intensify across the country, the IMD continues to monitor developments and issue timely alerts to minimize risk and ensure public safety.
