Indian javelin sensation Neeraj Chopra has climbed back to the top of the World Athletics rankings, overtaking Grenada’s Anderson Peters. Chopra now holds 1445 ranking points, placing him ahead of Peters, who stands at 1431 points.
A Stellar Season Marks Neeraj’s Comeback
Chopra’s return to the top has been backed by a string of impressive performances in the 2025 season. He began the year with a victory at the Potch Invitational in South Africa in April. In May, he threw 90.23 metres at the Doha Diamond League, setting a new national record and becoming the first Indian to join the 90m club.
He continued his form with a second-place finish at the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial in Poland, before clinching the Paris Diamond League title with an 88.16m throw in June. Most recently, Neeraj added another accolade by winning the Ostrava Golden Spike event.
Leading the Global Pack in Javelin
The current rankings show Neeraj Chopra at No. 1, followed by Anderson Peters in second place. Germany’s Julian Weber, who threw the season’s best 91.06m in Doha, is ranked third. Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem, who won gold at the Tokyo Olympics, holds the fourth position with 1370 points, while Jakub Vadlejch of Czechia rounds out the top five.
Neeraj’s Edge Over Peters Widens
This season, Neeraj has defeated Anderson Peters in all four head-to-head meetings, underlining his superiority. Their last encounter where Peters triumphed was back in 2022 at the World Championships in Budapest, where Peters secured gold and Neeraj finished with silver.
To date, Neeraj leads their career final matchups by 16 wins to 5, further solidifying his place as the sport’s dominant figure.
