In a bid to strengthen bilateral ties, President Droupadi Murmu of India engaged in fruitful discussions with Mauritian Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, culminating in the signing of four pivotal agreements between the two nations. The agreements, spanning areas such as financial services and double taxation avoidance, signify a concerted effort to bolster the already “robust” partnership shared between India and Mauritius.
The signing of the Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) followed President Murmu’s extensive talks with Prime Minister Jugnauth during her three-day state visit to Mauritius. Among the highlights of her visit was the joint inauguration, in virtual mode, of 14 community development projects facilitated by Indian grant assistance.
Of notable significance is the foundation stone laying ceremony for the New Forensic Science Laboratory of Mauritius, a project to be funded with Indian assistance, symbolizing the collaborative efforts between the two nations in bolstering infrastructure and enhancing capabilities.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) underscored the significance of President Murmu’s visit, highlighting discussions aimed at furthering bilateral cooperation and exploring avenues for mutual growth. The MEA emphasized the importance of the robust partnership between India and Mauritius in fostering regional stability and prosperity.
The exchange of MoUs between key institutions reflects a commitment to institutional linkages and mutual cooperation. Noteworthy agreements include collaborations between the GIFT International Financial Services Centres Authority of India and the Financial Services Commission of Mauritius, aimed at promoting cooperation in the financial services sector. Additionally, agreements between the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) of India and the Public Service Commission of Mauritius aim to facilitate knowledge sharing and expertise in public service recruitment.
Furthermore, a Protocol to amend the India-Mauritius Double Tax Avoidance Agreement, aligning it with OECD/G20 Base Erosion and Profit Shifting Minimum Standards, underscores the commitment to international best practices in taxation.
In the fight against corruption and money laundering, an MoU between the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) of India and the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) of Mauritius highlights the shared commitment to combating illicit activities and promoting transparency.
President Murmu’s participation as Chief Guest in Mauritius’s 56th National Day Celebrations underscores the enduring bonds between the two nations, rooted in shared history and mutual respect. Mauritius Day commemorates the country’s independence from Britain in 1968 and its subsequent transition to a republic in 1992.
