In a dramatic incident during a live broadcast, TV anchor Lopamudra Sinha from the Kolkata branch of Doordarshan fainted while reading heatwave updates. The incident occurred as temperatures soared across parts of India, reaching highs between 40 to 46 degrees Celsius.
Ms. Sinha’s sudden collapse was attributed to a combination of factors, including intense heat and a sudden drop in her blood pressure. She described the moment when she lost consciousness, attributing it to the teleprompter malfunctioning and extreme heat inside the studio.
In a video shared on her Facebook page, Ms. Sinha explained, “The teleprompter faded away, and I blacked out… I collapsed on my chair.” She emphasized feeling unwell and parched before the broadcast due to a snag in the cooling system, causing excessive heat in the studio.
During her 21-year career, Ms. Sinha had never felt the need for water during broadcasts but felt parched this time. She recalled requesting water during the broadcast as she started feeling unwell. Despite drinking water, she struggled to complete her presentation, with her speech becoming slurred before she ultimately fainted.
Drinking sufficient fluids is crucial in preventing heat-related illnesses, even indoors. Ms. Sinha’s collapse highlighted the importance of staying hydrated, especially during extreme weather conditions.
The ongoing heatwave has affected several states, including Odisha, Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal, and others. Maximum temperatures have soared well above normal levels, leading to severe heatwave conditions in some areas.
As Ms. Sinha recovered from the incident, she apologized to her channel and thanked the producers for managing the broadcast after her collapse. She also urged viewers to take care of themselves during the scorching heatwave, emphasizing the seriousness of staying hydrated and avoiding heat-related health risks.
The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by individuals working in high-pressure environments during extreme weather conditions and the importance of prioritizing health and safety measures.
