A significant portion of a crucial highway in Arunachal Pradesh has been washed away in a massive landslide, causing disruptions in road connectivity with Dibang Valley, a district bordering China. The landslides, triggered by heavy rainfall over the past few days, occurred between Hunli and Anini on National Highway-313.
Videos depicting the missing stretch of the highway highlight the severity of the situation, rendering it impassable for vehicles. This development poses challenges for locals and security forces who rely on this lifeline in the rugged terrain of Dibang Valley.
Authorities, including the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), have initiated efforts to repair the damaged sections of the highway. Fortunately, there is currently no shortage of essential supplies like food in the affected areas.
Expressing concern over the inconvenience caused to commuters, Chief Minister Pema Khandu emphasized the urgency of restoring connectivity between Hunli and Anini. This road serves as a crucial link connecting Dibang Valley to the rest of the country.
According to advisories issued by the Dibang Valley administration, the restoration of the highway is expected to take at least three days. Additionally, residents have been cautioned to avoid landslide-prone areas and water bodies for activities such as fishing. The advisory also advises against nighttime travel and earth-cutting activities during the monsoon season, emphasizing safety precautions in light of the natural hazards in the region.
