In response to a significant land subsidence incident that struck Pernote village in Ramban district, leading to the displacement of 500 individuals and extensive damage to property and infrastructure, the local administration has initiated comprehensive rescue and rehabilitation measures. The incident, which occurred on Thursday night, resulted in the displacement of nearly 50 families and caused significant damage to houses, roads, and electrical infrastructure.
District commissioner Baseer-ul-Haq Chaudhary highlighted ongoing efforts to alleviate the plight of affected residents, with a focus on establishing a 24×7 operational kitchen at the campsite in Pernote to provide continuous support to affected families. Additional district commissioner Varunjeet Singh Charak emphasized the extensive damage within a one-kilometer radius, affecting both residential structures and agricultural lands.
Rescue operations involving teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local NGOs are actively engaged in addressing the immediate challenges posed by the land subsidence. The administration has also enlisted the expertise of institutions like the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and Geological Survey of India (GSI) to conduct a detailed study of the phenomenon and formulate a comprehensive report.
SK Gautam from the General Reserve Engineer Force (GREF) highlighted the ongoing movement of landmass and the challenges in restoring the affected road stretch, which remains a priority concern. Villagers have reported extensive damage to crops, adding to the economic impact of the disaster.
Efforts to provide relief and temporary shelter to affected families are underway, with the establishment of a community center in Ramban serving as a transitional hub. The relief camp and district administration facilities remain operational in Pernote Panchayat to cater to the ongoing needs of the affected population.
