The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that the monsoon has further advanced into several parts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai and Pune, along with the remaining parts of the central Arabian Sea and parts of the north Arabian Sea. This advancement occurred on Sunday, two days ahead of the usual June 11 date for Mumbai.
The IMD has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall, with isolated extremely heavy rain expected over south Konkan, Goa, south Madhya Maharashtra, and Coastal and North Interior Karnataka on June 9 and 10. The northern limit of the monsoon now passes through Thane, Ahmednagar, Beed, Nizamabad, Sukma, Malkangiri, Vizianagaram, and Islampur.
“Monsoon is active over the west coast, bringing good rains to coastal Maharashtra and Karnataka,” said Mahesh Palawat, vice president of climate and meteorology at Skymet Weather. He added that while the Arabian Sea branch is providing substantial rain, the Bay of Bengal branch is expected to pick up pace from June 13-14, covering the rest of West Bengal, east Jharkhand, and Bihar. Overall, the monsoon is progressing normally.
Isolated extremely heavy rain (over 20 cm) is expected over south Konkan, Goa, south Madhya Maharashtra, and Coastal Karnataka on June 9 and 10, and North Interior Karnataka from June 9 to 11. The IMD has issued a red category warning for these areas, urging authorities to take preventive measures against flash floods and heavy rain.
In contrast to the monsoon advancement, a fresh spell of heat wave conditions is expected to begin over northwest India from Monday. Heat wave conditions are predicted to persist over parts of east India and Uttar Pradesh for the next five days.
Heat wave conditions were observed in isolated pockets of East Uttar Pradesh and Bihar on Saturday, with maximum temperatures ranging between 42-45°C in many parts of East Uttar Pradesh, and some parts of north Madhya Pradesh and West Uttar Pradesh. Isolated pockets of Haryana, Delhi, Bihar, and Gujarat also experienced similar conditions, with temperatures 2-4°C above normal. Prayagraj in East Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest maximum temperature of 45.2°C.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy rain at isolated places was recorded over Konkan and Goa on Saturday. Additionally, heavy to very heavy rainfall was observed at isolated places in Assam, Meghalaya, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Madhya Maharashtra, and Coastal Karnataka.
The IMD has also forecast heat wave conditions in isolated pockets of Punjab, Haryana, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Gangetic West Bengal from June 9 to 13. Similarly, Jammu division, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi, West Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh are expected to experience heat wave conditions from June 11 to 13, and Odisha on June 11 and 12.
