“Unrest in Manipur: Mob Burns Down Two Empty Meitei Homes in Jiribam”

Violence Escalates in Manipur's Jiribam: Two Meitei Houses Set Ablaze, Over 70 Houses Destroyed

Amid escalating tensions in Manipur’s Jiribam district, two abandoned houses belonging to the Meitei community were reportedly set on fire by unidentified individuals in the early hours of Friday. This incident adds to the wave of violence that has engulfed the region, prompting over a thousand people to seek refuge in safer areas in neighbouring Assam and other parts of Jiribam.

The unrest in Jiribam intensified following the discovery of a beheaded body on June 6, leading to a fresh bout of violence and the destruction of over 70 houses belonging to both the Meitei and other communities. The incident at Bhutangkhal under Borobekra police station occurred despite the deployment of additional security forces in the district to quell the violence.

Jiribam, situated on the border with Assam, is a vital commercial center in Manipur. However, commercial activities have come to a standstill due to the ongoing violence and displacement of residents.

Authorities have increased security measures in vulnerable areas to prevent further disturbances. Manipur Police, along with central forces, are actively monitoring the situation to ensure peace and stability.

In response to the volatile situation, the All Jiribam Muslim Welfare Society (AJMWS) has taken steps to limit festivities during the Eid-ul-Adha festival in the district. A statement issued by AJMWS outlined restrictions on recreational activities and gatherings, emphasizing the importance of prayers and essential activities during this period of turmoil.

The society has called for a special prayer on Eid day to seek peace and normalcy in Jiribam and to honor those affected by the violence. It has also urged the Muslim community to refrain from unnecessary movements and to cooperate with authorities to restore calm in the region.
