A video showing Union Minister Savitri Thakur misspelling the ‘Beti Padhao, Beti Bachao’ slogan during an event in Madhya Pradesh has surfaced on social media, leading to scrutiny and questions from the opposition Congress regarding her credentials. The incident occurred during the ‘School Chalo Abhiyan’ event on June 18 at a government school in Dhar, where Thakur was the chief guest.
In the video, Thakur can be seen writing the slogan in Devanagari script on a whiteboard, but her spelling was incorrect. The opposition Congress quickly seized on this error, using it to question Thakur’s competence as the Minister of State for Women and Child Development.
Senior Congress leader K K Mishra expressed disappointment, stating, “It is the misfortune of democracy that people holding constitutional posts and responsible for significant departments lack competence even in their mother tongue. How can they be capable of running their ministry?” He suggested amending the Constitution to set a minimum educational qualification for electoral candidates.
Dhar district BJP president Manoj Somani defended Thakur, calling the Congress’ reaction petty and anti-tribal. He emphasized Thakur’s sincerity and accused the Congress of insulting a tribal woman.
However, the Leader of Opposition in the state assembly, Umang Singhar, criticized Thakur’s error, questioning her leadership qualities and educational background despite holding positions as an MP and Union minister. Singhar highlighted the impact of such mistakes on public perception and called for more educated and responsible leaders.
Singhar also criticized the Modi government, alleging a preference for rubber stamp ministers over educated leaders who raise important questions and contribute to societal upliftment.
