Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi officially filed his nomination papers for the Telangana Rajya Sabha by-election scheduled for September 3. Singhvi’s candidacy follows the resignation of K Kesava Rao, who left the Opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) to join the ruling Congress, triggering the by-election.
The filing ceremony took place in Hyderabad and was attended by Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, his deputy Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, Congress Telangana in-charge Deepa Das Munshi, and other prominent Congress leaders. Singhvi submitted his nomination papers to Returning Officer Upender Reddy.
The BRS has opted not to field a candidate for this election, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with only eight legislators in the 119-member Telangana Assembly, has not yet announced a candidate. Singhvi is expected to be elected to the Rajya Sabha unopposed.
Singhvi expressed his gratitude and honor at being nominated, acknowledging the support of the Congress legislators and thanking Keshava Rao for his backing. The Congress party is poised to secure the Rajya Sabha seat, reinforcing its influence in the Upper House.
