A shocking incident occurred during a theatre performance of the Ramayana in Odisha’s Ganjam district, where a 45-year-old actor playing the role of a demon killed a live pig on stage and ate its raw meat. The disturbing event, which took place on November 24 in Ralab village, has sparked widespread outrage, with condemnation coming from both political leaders and animal rights activists.
The Incident and Arrests
The actor, identified as Bimbadhar Gouda, was arrested following the gruesome act. He reportedly ripped open the pig’s stomach with a knife, consuming some of its organs in full public view. The pig was tied to the ceiling of the stage, adding to the horrific spectacle.
The play, organized as part of the Kanjianal Yatra in the village, also featured snakes on display. According to the authorities, one of the organizers of the play, whose name has not been disclosed, was also arrested for cruelty to animals and violating the Wildlife Protection Act.
In response to the incident, the Berhampur Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Sunny Khokar confirmed that the police were also seeking to arrest the individuals responsible for displaying the snakes during the performance. “We are looking for the persons who displayed snakes in the theatre. They will also be arrested soon,” Khokar said.
Public Outrage and Legislative Condemnation
The disturbing act has drawn strong condemnation from the public and political leaders. Ruling BJP members, including Babu Singh and Sanatan Bijuli, expressed their outrage in the state assembly on Monday. They called for swift action against the individuals responsible for the incident.
Animal rights activists have also voiced their concerns, demanding severe consequences for the perpetrators. Videos of the incident, which went viral on social media, contributed to the growing outrage across the state.
Violation of Animal Welfare Laws
The incident has raised concerns regarding animal cruelty and the violation of animal protection laws. The state government had issued a guideline in August last year prohibiting the public display of snakes, including by certified snake handlers, as part of efforts to ensure the welfare of animals during public events.
The police have registered a case against the actor and the organizers involved in the event. Hinjili police station inspector-in-charge Srinibas Sethy confirmed the arrest of the actor and emphasized the seriousness of the incident, stating, “We have registered a case against the theatre actor who killed the pig and ate its meat in the theatre.”
A Call for Stronger Regulations
The incident has once again highlighted the need for stricter regulations on public performances involving animals. Activists and concerned citizens are calling for greater oversight to prevent similar events in the future, emphasizing the importance of respecting animal rights and ensuring the humane treatment of animals in all public settings.
