Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has penned a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, questioning the recommendation for the expulsion of Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra. Chowdhury’s letter highlights concerns over the severity of the punishment and procedural inconsistencies surrounding the Ethics Committee’s decision.
The letter, arriving just days before the ethics panel’s report on Moitra’s expulsion recommendation is set to be presented in the House, emphasizes the absence of a clear definition for “unethical conduct” and the absence of a formulated Code of Conduct for Lower House MPs.
Chowdhury, known for his critical stance against the Trinamool, expressed confidence in the Speaker’s leadership to prevent any injustice. He pointed out the unprecedented nature of the punitive action recommended, highlighting the gravity of Moitra’s potential expulsion from Parliament.
The Congress leader raised queries regarding the investigative process, highlighting the limited historical instances of punitive actions such as admonition, reprimand, or suspension, in contrast to the proposed expulsion. He underscored discrepancies in the investigation, including the absence of a well-defined money trail in Moitra’s case.
Chowdhury further emphasized the need for a streamlined process within the Ethics Committee and advocated for an examination of protocols to ensure fair proceedings for all House members.
The letter adds to the growing discussions surrounding Moitra’s case, with opposition leaders expressing reservations against her expulsion. Chowdhury’s letter aims to scrutinize the procedures and ensure fairness and transparency in the Parliament’s functioning.
