Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has launched an ambitious ‘Winter Action Plan’ aimed at combating air pollution in the national capital. The plan, unveiled by Mr. Kejriwal, focuses on a series of targeted measures to address the critical issue of air quality.A significant aspect of the plan is the identification of 13 pollution hotspots spread across Delhi. These hotspots have been identified through an inventorization of major air pollution sources, enabling the government to implement focused preventive actions.

Among the key initiatives is the use of water sprinklers to settle dust particles and the implementation of alternative traffic routes for approximately 90 roads that experience heavy congestion throughout the day. To address vehicular pollution, 385 dedicated teams have been formed to inspect vehicles for valid pollution certificates and prevent the operation of overage cars.

Mr. Kejriwal highlighted that the Supreme Court had previously banned diesel and petrol vehicles older than 10 and 15 years, respectively, in Delhi, emphasizing the government’s commitment to curbing pollution at its source.

The open burning of garbage has also been prohibited in Delhi, and 611 monitoring teams will ensure strict adherence to this regulation. Additionally, Mr. Kejriwal urged residents to download the Green Delhi mobile application, enabling them to report any activities contributing to pollution directly to the concerned department.

The Chief Minister has instructed officials to rigorously adhere to the guidelines outlined in the 15-point plan as part of the city’s pollution-fighting efforts.

Annually, during the winter season, the Delhi government formulates and implements an action plan with a range of measures aimed at mitigating air pollution. Mr. Kejriwal cited data indicating a decline in pollution levels in the city as a result of government initiatives.

He also lauded the success of the firecracker ban in Delhi, emphasizing its positive impact on air quality.

As Delhi prepares for the winter months, the ‘Winter Action Plan’ represents a comprehensive and proactive approach to addressing the critical issue of air pollution in the city, ensuring the well-being of its residents.
