The devastating floods in Assam have claimed six more lives, bringing the death toll to 70 this year, according to the latest bulletin issued by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). The fatalities include two individuals in Charaideo and one each in Goalpara, Morigaon, Sonitpur, and Tinsukia districts.
The flood situation in Assam remained critical on Saturday, with nearly 24 lakh people affected across 29 districts. The floods have submerged cropland spanning 68,768.5 hectares, causing significant agricultural losses.
Among the worst-hit districts are Dhubri, with 7,97,918 people affected, Cachar with 1,75,231 people impacted, and Darrang, where 1,63,218 people are affected. The Brahmaputra River continues to flow above danger marks at Nimatighat, Tezpur, Goalpara, and Dhubri. Its tributaries, including Burhi Dihing at Chenimari, Dikhou at Sivasagar, Disang at Nanglamuraghat, Dhansiri at Numaligarh, Jia Bharali at NT Road crossing, and Kopili at Dharamtul and Sankosh in Golakganj, are also flowing above the danger levels. The Barak River is above the danger mark at AP Ghat, BP Ghat, and Kushiyara at Karimganj town.
A total of 23,96,648 people are affected by the floods, and 53,429 have taken shelter in 577 relief camps. The floods have also impacted 15,49,161 animals and claimed the lives of 114 wild animals during the second wave of the flood.
