Bengaluru to Expand Metro Network to 175 km by 2026, Announces D K Shivakumar

Bengaluru to Have 175 km of Metro Service by 2026, Announces D K Shivakumar

In a major announcement for the city’s metro network, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar revealed that Bengaluru will have 175 kilometers of new metro lines operational by 2026. Speaking to the media after inspecting the newly extended metro line from Nagasandra to Madavara on Tumkur Road, Shivakumar outlined a timeline for the expansion, with 30 kilometers of new lines set to be operational by 2025.

The 3.14-km extension from Nagasandra to Madavara, which will open for commercial operations on November 7, marks a significant step in the city’s metro development. Shivakumar highlighted that the metro network has seen tremendous progress, with the completion of the first and second phases and the approval of the third phase by the Centre. “We have already paid ₹1,130 crore for new trains,” he added, emphasizing the commitment to enhancing Bengaluru’s public transport system.

The Deputy Chief Minister also took part in a test run along the newly extended Green Line, traveling from Yeshwanthpur Metro Station to Madavara. Alongside him were Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya and other local MLAs.

Shivakumar elaborated on the government’s efforts to improve metro connectivity and the surrounding infrastructure. Discussions are underway with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to construct an underpass at Madavara metro station to ease traffic flow. Additionally, plans are in place to build a pedestrian skywalk at Manjunathanagar metro station. An agreement with Indian Railways has also been signed to jointly develop a pedestrian passage at Yeshwanthpur railway station.

“We are preparing a project report to develop an underpass at Chikkabidarakallu in collaboration with NHAI,” Shivakumar said, adding that these efforts are aimed at enhancing connectivity and convenience for commuters. The government is also working with NHAI on the construction of another underpass at Madavara metro station. The initiative is part of a broader plan to make commuting easier, particularly for those traveling from Tumakuru to Bengaluru, who can park their vehicles at the BEIC ground and take the metro to avoid the city’s traffic.

With the 3-km Nagasandra to Madavara extension, the Green Line of Bengaluru’s Namma Metro now spans 33.46 kilometers, while the Purple Line covers 40.5 kilometers. Shivakumar expressed his gratitude to the Centre and all stakeholders involved in the project, acknowledging that Bengaluru now has the highest metro ridership in the country.

The expansion of Bengaluru’s metro system is expected to greatly improve the city’s public transport infrastructure, offering better connectivity, reducing traffic congestion, and contributing to environmental sustainability. The full rollout of the 175 km of metro service by 2026 will further cement Bengaluru’s reputation as a city embracing modern infrastructure solutions for urban mobility.
