Bengaluru is gearing up for an unusually chilly December night, with temperatures expected to drop to their lowest levels in 14 years. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted that the city’s minimum temperature could reach 12.4°C on Tuesday night, breaking a record that has stood since 2010.
This dramatic temperature drop follows a trend of persistent rains caused by low-pressure systems along the coast, which have led to a significant cooling effect across the region. Historically, Bengaluru’s December nights typically hover around a mild 15.7°C. However, the city has already seen a slight dip, with Sunday night recording a minimum temperature of 15.5°C. The HAL airport area registered a cooler 14.7°C, while Bengaluru International Airport recorded 14.5°C.
The last time Bengaluru experienced such a sharp drop in December was on December 24, 2011, when the temperature fell to 12.8°C. If the forecast holds true, this Tuesday will be the coldest December night in over a decade.
Looking ahead, the IMD predicts mostly clear skies for the coming days, with the possibility of fog or mist in some areas during the early morning hours. The maximum daytime temperature is expected to hover around 27°C, with nighttime lows settling at 16°C.
While this cold snap is exceptional, it is far from the lowest temperature ever recorded in Bengaluru. Historical data from the IMD shows that the city’s coldest-ever temperature was a chilling 7.8°C on January 13, 1884.
As the city braces for this cold front, residents are advised to prepare for colder-than-usual conditions, with the IMD also urging caution for those traveling early in the morning when fog or mist may impair visibility.
Today’s Weather Update
As of today, Bengaluru’s temperature is 23.61°C, with a forecasted minimum of 15.36°C and a maximum of 25.59°C. The relative humidity stands at 34%, and the wind is blowing at a speed of 34 km/h. The sun rose at 06:34 AM and will set at 05:56 PM, with cloudy skies expected throughout the day.
Additionally, the city’s air quality index (AQI) is recorded at 169.0, indicating moderate air quality.
As Bengaluru prepares for its coldest December night in over a decade, residents can expect clear skies and chilly weather conditions in the days to come.
