New Delhi, September 15, 2023 – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has issued a three-line whip to all its Lok Sabha members, directing them to ensure their presence in Parliament during the Special Parliament Session scheduled to commence on September 18 and continue until September 22, 2023. The whip emphasizes that important legislative matters will be on the agenda for discussion and approval during this session.
In a statement, the whip read, “All BJP members in Lok Sabha are hereby informed that some very important Legislative Business will be taken up for discussion and passing in the Lok Sabha from Monday, the 18th September to Friday, the 22nd September 2023. All members of BJP in Lok Sabha are therefore requested to be positively present in the House throughout on all the five days i.e. from Monday, the 18th September to Friday, the 22nd September 2023 and support the Government’s stand.”
While the specific agenda of the Special Parliament Session had been kept confidential, the government recently unveiled some of the topics that will be addressed. These include a special discussion on Parliament’s 75-year journey and the consideration and passage of a bill concerning the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner and other election commissioners, which was introduced in Rajya Sabha during the previous Monsoon session.
Additional items listed for discussion in the Lok Sabha during the session include ‘The Advocates (Amendment) Bill, 2023’ and ‘The Press and Registration of Periodicals Bill, 2023,’ both of which have already been passed by Rajya Sabha on August 3, 2023. Furthermore, ‘The Post Office Bill, 2023’ has been included in the Lok Sabha’s business agenda, having been introduced in Rajya Sabha on August 10, 2023. It’s worth noting that the list of business remains tentative, and more items may be added as needed.
In preparation for the Special Parliament Session, an all-party meeting has been scheduled for September 17, a day prior to the five-day session’s commencement. This development follows earlier concerns raised by Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, who had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking clarification on the session’s agenda. With the government’s subsequent release of the agenda, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh expressed apprehensions that there may be undisclosed legislative matters yet to be revealed during the session.
