Three medium-intensity blasts have damaged a bridge in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district, occurring just days before the second phase of Lok Sabha elections in the region. The explosions took place near Saparmeina along National Highway-2, which connects Imphal to Nagaland’s Dimapur, prompting heightened security measures and concerns about electoral safety.
The blasts, reported to have occurred overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday, targeted a bridge critical for transportation in the area. A security official confirmed the incident, highlighting the strategic location of the blasts near Sapormeina on the crucial highway.
No group has claimed responsibility for the blasts thus far. Security forces have swiftly responded by sealing off the affected area and conducting thorough checks, especially at other key bridges. Restrictions on heavy vehicle movement have been imposed, impacting local commuters.
The timing of the blasts, just ahead of the Lok Sabha polls’ second phase, raises concerns about potential disruptions to the electoral process. This incident follows previous instances of violence and disturbances during the initial phase of polling in Manipur, including attacks on polling booths and allegations of coercion.
Following incidents during the first phase of polling, re-polling was announced at 11 polling stations within the inner Manipur Lok Sabha constituency. Additionally, clashes between conflicting communities in Imphal West highlighted ongoing ethnic tensions and security challenges in the region.
The recent bridge blasts add to the complex security landscape in Manipur, where sporadic incidents of violence and ethnic clashes have been reported. Authorities are on high alert to prevent further disruptions and ensure the safety of citizens and electoral processes.
