“Both Sides Can Sit Together, Resolve Situation”: S Jaishankar Urges Diplomatic Dialogue with Maldives

In a bid to de-escalate tensions between India and the Maldives, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasized the need for both nations to engage in constructive dialogue during an exclusive interview with NDTV on Wednesday. The diplomatic discourse comes in the wake of critical comments from three Maldivian ministers directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, sparking a row that has not only affected bilateral relations but also impacted the flow of tourists to the idyllic island nation.

Jaishankar acknowledged India’s influential position in the region, stating that the country often becomes entangled in regional disputes due to its stature. Despite the challenges posed by differing political positions, he stressed the importance of mature conversations to address concerns. “In our neighborhood, there are many countries… there are elections in these countries where different parties take different positions. Now, we are a large neighbor, and we become an issue in their elections,” he stated.

While recognizing the right of nations to take distinct positions during elections, Jaishankar emphasized the need for responsible behavior once in public office. He underlined the significance of careful consideration in actions and statements made by government officials, whether on social media, in meetings, or through the media.

“We have had some meetings and hope to have some more. Ultimately, I would like for all of us to sit down and talk. If they have issues, we will listen and try to resolve it because, ultimately, we are all neighbors,” Jaishankar asserted, advocating for diplomatic resolution rather than escalating tensions.

The ongoing diplomatic row has witnessed Maldives distancing itself from India and gravitating towards China, especially under the leadership of Mohammed Muizzu, who was elected last year with an assertive “India Out” policy. Muizzu has faced criticism for his pro-China stance, prompting an impeachment threat over his anti-India position. Notably, he has also ordered Indian troops stationed in the Maldives to leave by March 15.

The latest flashpoint in the strained relations is the Maldives granting permission to a Chinese ‘research’ ship, the Xian Yang Hong 03, flagged as a spy ship, to dock in the capital, Male, next week. Despite these developments, Jaishankar expressed hope for a diplomatic resolution, citing the inevitability of mutual cooperation between neighboring nations. “History and geography are very powerful forces. There is no escape from that,” he added.

As the situation continues to evolve, the international community watches closely, hopeful for a diplomatic breakthrough that would restore amicable relations between India and the Maldives.
