The Border Security Force (BSF) on Friday seized two drones and over 1 kilogram of heroin near the India-Pakistan border in Punjab, marking a significant crackdown on cross-border smuggling activities.
According to a BSF press release, the drones were recovered during separate patrols by BSF troops. The first drone, a DJI Mavic 3 Classic, was discovered around 12:15 pm on Friday in a farming field near Mahawa village in the Amritsar district. The drone was carrying a packet of suspected heroin weighing 560 grams.
The second drone, also a DJI Mavic 3 Classic, was seized during a joint search operation conducted by the BSF and Punjab police around 2:34 pm. This drone, which was found in a farming field near Dal village in Tarn Taran district, was carrying a packet of suspected heroin weighing 572 grams.
The total weight of the heroin seized in both operations amounted to 1.132 kilograms.
The BSF has expressed concern over the growing use of drones by smugglers to transport illicit substances across the border. The latest recoveries underscore the ongoing challenge faced by security forces in curbing cross-border drug trafficking.
Both the drones and the heroin have been seized, and further investigations are underway. Authorities have vowed to continue their efforts to combat drug smuggling along the sensitive border areas.
In recent months, there has been a significant rise in the use of drones by criminal groups operating from across the border to smuggle drugs, weapons, and other contraband into India. The BSF has stepped up its vigilance and patrolling efforts to counter this new method of illegal trade.
