Himachal Pradesh Turns Into White Wonderland: Snowfall Brings Cheer and Challenges

Shimla and Manali, popular tourist destinations in Himachal Pradesh, transformed into picturesque winter paradises on Christmas as fresh snowfall blanketed the regions. However, the snowfall also brought challenges, including road closures, accidents, and a surge in stranded tourists.

White Christmas Brings Joy to Tourists

The holiday season brought a surge of visitors to Shimla, Manali, and other hill stations, as tourists flocked to experience a rare ‘white Christmas.’ Images of snow-covered landscapes flooded social media, showcasing the beauty of the regions draped in a blanket of snow.

MK Seth, president of the Shimla Hotel and Tourism Stakeholders’ Association, reported that hotel occupancy in Shimla reached over 70%, with the snowfall contributing to a 30-percentage point rise in room bookings.

    Road Closures and Stranded Vehicles

The snowfall led to the closure of 223 roads, including three national highways, causing significant disruptions. Key routes such as the Attari-Leh highway and roads in Kullu, Kinnaur, and Lahaul-Spiti districts were affected. Hundreds of vehicles, especially near the Atal Tunnel, were stranded.

State disaster officials, led by Additional Chief Secretary (Revenue and Disaster) Onkar Sharma, ensured the safe evacuation of tourists from snow-affected areas. Sharma urged travelers to follow advisories issued by local authorities and avoid driving on snow-covered roads.

    Tragic Incidents Reported

While the snowfall brought festive cheer, it also caused tragedies. Four fatalities were reported due to vehicle skidding accidents. Authorities are continuing to caution tourists about the risks associated with icy roads and extreme weather conditions.

    Weather Forecast and Precautions

The Meteorological Department has predicted more snow and rain in isolated parts of the state, particularly Shimla, from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon, with peak activity expected on Saturday. Travelers are advised to stay updated on weather conditions and plan their journeys accordingly.

Himachal Pradesh remains a popular winter destination, offering breathtaking views and memorable experiences. However, tourists are reminded to prioritize safety and adhere to local guidelines to navigate the challenges posed by severe weather.
