Cyclone Biparjoy: 30,000 People Shifted From Gujarat's Coastal Areas

Gandhinagar, Gujarat – As cyclone ‘Biparjoy’ approaches the coast of Gujarat, the state administration has taken proactive measures to ensure the safety of its residents. More than 94,000 individuals residing in eight coastal districts have been shifted to temporary shelters, according to official reports.

The Chief Minister of Gujarat, Bhupendra Patel, convened a meeting with top officials at the State Emergency Operations Centre in Gandhinagar to review the situation and discuss relief efforts. The government has set up 1,521 shelter homes across the affected districts, providing a safe haven for those evacuated.

Among the evacuated individuals, approximately 8,900 are children, 1,131 are pregnant women, and 4,697 are elderly persons. Medical teams have been deployed to the shelters to provide necessary healthcare services. The well-being of the affected population remains a top priority for the authorities.

The evacuation figures indicate that 46,800 people were relocated in Kutch district, followed by 10,749 in Devbhumi Dwarka, 9,942 in Jamnagar, 9,243 in Morbi, 6,822 in Rajkot, 4,864 in Junagadh, 4,379 in Porbandar, and 1,605 in Gir Somnath district.

According to the latest updates from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the speed at which cyclone ‘Biparjoy’ is approaching Gujarat has decreased. As a result, the landfall is now expected between 9:00 pm to 10:00 pm on Thursday, with wind speeds ranging from 115 kmph to 125 kmph. This delay provides some additional time for preparation and response efforts.

In anticipation of potential power outages, the state Water Supply department has placed 25 generator sets on standby in Kutch, Dwarka, Jamnagar, and five sets in Morbi. This precautionary measure ensures uninterrupted water supply to affected areas during the cyclone.

The IMD has classified cyclone ‘Biparjoy’ as a ‘very severe cyclonic storm’ and predicts that it will make landfall near Jakhau port. However, with the reduced speed, authorities have more time to make necessary arrangements and mitigate potential risks.

The state government’s prompt response and effective coordination with various departments reflect its commitment to safeguarding the lives and well-being of the citizens. These proactive measures demonstrate the state’s preparedness and ability to handle such natural disasters.

As the cyclone approaches the coast of Gujarat, it is essential for residents to remain vigilant and follow the instructions and advisories issued by the authorities. By prioritizing safety and taking necessary precautions, Gujarat aims to minimize the impact of cyclone ‘Biparjoy’ and ensure the well-being of its people.

The situation continues to be closely monitored by the government, and efforts will be made to provide timely assistance and relief to affected areas. Through collective efforts and effective disaster management, Gujarat aims to overcome the challenges posed by cyclone ‘Biparjoy’ and emerge stronger in its aftermath.
