Cyclone Fengal has commenced its landfall process close to the Puducherry region, causing significant disruptions in Chennai and surrounding areas. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclone’s landfall began at approximately 5:30 pm on November 30, 2024, and it is expected to take around four hours for the storm to fully cross the coast. The cyclone is likely to affect the north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coastline, with wind speeds of 70-80 km/h, gusting up to 90 km/h.
S. Balachandran, the Additional Director General of IMD-Regional Meteorological Centre, confirmed that the cyclone’s spiral bands had entered land, signaling the start of the landfall. The storm is anticipated to move west-southwestward and cross areas between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram, near Puducherry, as a cyclonic storm.
Chennai Airport Shut, Flights Cancelled
In response to the ongoing cyclone, Chennai Airport has been closed until 4 am on December 1. Affected by the storm, over 50 flights departing and arriving at the airport have been cancelled, leaving thousands of passengers stranded. Airlines have issued travel advisories to inform passengers about the disruptions. The airport is closely monitoring the situation, with a WebEx meeting held earlier in the day involving senior officials from the IMD and other stakeholders.
“As weather conditions improve, senior officials are working to resume airport operations as soon as possible,” the Chennai Airport said in a statement posted on social media.
Train Services Disrupted
Cyclone Fengal’s heavy rains have also led to significant disruptions in train services. Southern Railway announced changes to several train schedules as the cyclone impacts the region. The authorities are advising passengers to stay updated on travel advisories and potential delays.
Waterlogging and Flooding in Chennai
The heavy rainfall from Cyclone Fengal has caused widespread waterlogging in several parts of Chennai. Localities including Korattur, Velachery-Madipakkam, and Kodungaiyur have reported severe inundation. Water has entered homes in suburban areas such as Hasthinapuram and Tirumalai Nagar, exacerbating the flooding situation. Authorities are urging residents to remain cautious and stay informed about evacuation measures if necessary.
Ongoing Monitoring of the Situation
The IMD and local authorities are continuing to monitor Cyclone Fengal’s movement and its impact on the region. Efforts are underway to manage the situation, mitigate damage, and ensure the safety of residents in affected areas.
