Delhi CM Atishi Declares Public Holiday on November 7 for Chhat Pooja; Schools to Remain Closed

Delhi Chief Minister Atishi has announced that November 7 will be a public holiday in honor of Chhat Pooja, a significant festival celebrated by many residents in the national capital region. This decision means that all educational institutions in Delhi—including schools, colleges, and universities—will be closed for the day.

Atishi made the announcement on her official X account, expressing her happiness at the government’s decision. “I am happy to inform you that the Delhi government has decided that there will be a holiday on November 7 for the festival of Chhat, so that all the brothers and sisters of Purvanchal can celebrate the festival with pomp and show,” she wrote in Hindi. The official order highlights the importance of Chhat Pooja for the people of Delhi, stating, “The government of NCT of Delhi has decided to declare November 7, 2024, as a public holiday on account of Chhat Pooja.”

In related news, Delhi continues to grapple with severe air quality issues. As of Sunday morning, most areas in the capital reported an Air Quality Index (AQI) exceeding 350, categorized as “very poor.” The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) recorded an AQI of 364 at 7 AM, with New Moti Bagh at 352, RK Puram at 380, Vivek Vihar at 388, and Dwarka Sector 8 at 385. Nehru Nagar and Anand Vihar were particularly concerning, with AQIs of 431 and 427, respectively, placing them in the “severe” category.

An AQI reading is deemed “poor” between 200 and 300, “very poor” at 301-400, and “severe” at 401-450. When levels rise above 450, it is categorized as “severe plus.” According to guidelines from the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) in NCR and adjoining areas, state governments have the authority to discontinue physical classes and switch to online learning if air quality levels reach severe thresholds.

As the festival approaches, the Delhi government is not only providing a day off for educational institutions but also addressing ongoing air quality concerns, urging residents to take precautions as they celebrate Chhat Pooja.
