A Delhi court on Friday sent AAP’s Uttam Nagar MLA, Naresh Balyan, to judicial custody in connection with an alleged organised crime case, while denying further police remand. Special Judge Kaveri Baweja passed the order after Balyan was produced before the court, following the expiry of his seven-day police custody.
The Delhi police had sought a 10-day extension of his custody, claiming that further questioning was necessary to uncover a larger conspiracy tied to the case. However, Judge Baweja rejected the request and ordered Balyan’s judicial custody.
Balyan was arrested on December 4 in the ongoing organised crime investigation, under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA). In an earlier development, he had been granted bail in a separate extortion case. His arrest in the current case, which is being investigated by Delhi police, has drawn significant attention, with accusations of his involvement in a larger criminal network.
The police had hoped that further custody would shed light on the alleged organised crime ring, but the court’s decision means that Balyan will now remain in judicial custody as the investigation continues.
