In a move aimed at boosting voter turnout and ensuring democratic participation, the Chief Electoral Office of Delhi has declared a paid holiday on the day of Lok Sabha polls, scheduled for May 25. This decision extends to all eligible employees, whether in public or private sectors, who are registered voters in Delhi.
The official order mandates that eligible voters from neighbouring states such as Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan, who work in Delhi, are also entitled to the paid holiday. This initiative aligns with Section 135B of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, empowering employees to exercise their fundamental right to vote without facing work-related obstacles.
The Chief Electoral Officer of Delhi, P Krishnamurthy, highlighted the significance of this move in enhancing voter participation and awareness in the electoral process. The implementation of the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) Order underscores the commitment to ensuring unhindered participation in elections.
According to the official statement, employers across public, private, or other establishments are urged to comply with this order, ensuring that employees have the opportunity to contribute to the democratic process. Failure to adhere to this directive may result in fines and penalties as per the specified provisions.
This proactive measure by the Delhi Chief Electoral Office reflects a concerted effort to promote civic engagement and strengthen democratic values by prioritizing voter accessibility and participation.
