Delhi Government Plans Solar-Powered Cruise Service on Yamuna to Promote Tourism

Delhi Government to Launch Eco-Friendly Cruise Service on Yamuna to Boost Tourism

The Delhi government is set to introduce a river cruise service on the Yamuna between Sonia Vihar and Jagatpur, aiming to enhance tourism and promote sustainable water transport. The initiative is part of a broader effort to rejuvenate the river and improve its accessibility for recreational activities.

    Eco-Friendly Cruise Plans

The Delhi Tourism and Transport Development Corporation (DTTDC) has released a request for quotation (RFQ) to find an operator for two solar or electric battery-powered cruise boats along a six-kilometre stretch of the Yamuna, from the Wazirabad barrage (Sonia Vihar) to Jagatpur (near the Shani temple).

Once operational, the project is expected to boost river-cruise tourism and provide an eco-friendly transport alternative for visitors. The development will be carried out in coordination with multiple agencies, including the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), Delhi Development Authority (DDA), Delhi Jal Board (DJB), and the irrigation and flood control department.

    Operator and Route Details

The DTTDC will hire an operator to manage the seven to eight-kilometre round-trip service, which will begin and end at Sonia Vihar. The project’s execution will involve:

    • IWAI and DDA handling infrastructure development,
    • DJB assisting with waterway maintenance, and
    • The irrigation and flood control department providing floating jetties, shore facilities, and charging infrastructure for the boats.

The cruise operator will provide two electric-solar hybrid boats, each capable of accommodating 20-30 passengers and reaching speeds of 5-7 knots.

    Boat Features and Safety Measures

To ensure a comfortable and secure experience, the boats will be equipped with:

    • Inboard bio-toilets (zero discharge) to maintain river cleanliness,
    • An announcement system for passenger guidance,
    • Life jackets and other safety gear, and
    • Air conditioning to enhance the cruising experience.

The boats must be leased or owned by the operator and should be no older than two years. As per the proposal, at least four round trips per day must be conducted.
