“Delhi Pollution Eases as CAQM Lifts Stage 3 GRAP Measures After Rainfall Boosts Air Quality”

Delhi Pollution: CAQM Revokes Stage 3 GRAP Measures as Rain Improves Air Quality

In a significant development, the Centre’s Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has revoked the Stage 3 curbs under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) as air pollution levels in Delhi and its adjoining areas showed a decline, aided by recent rainfall. The decision came on Friday after a noticeable improvement in the air quality.

According to CAQM, Delhi’s air quality had shifted from the “severe” category to the “poor” range, prompting the withdrawal of the stringent Stage 3 measures that had been previously enforced. As of 7 pm, the 24-hour average air quality index (AQI) stood at 324, marking a decline in pollution levels across the city.

    Improved Air Quality

The recent rains were credited with helping reduce pollution levels in the national capital. The India Meteorological Department and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology have forecast that the city’s air quality is expected to improve further due to favorable meteorological conditions.

A statement from CAQM noted, “The air quality in Delhi has improved, and as a result, the measures under Stage III are now being revoked.” However, the commission emphasized that Stage 1 and Stage 2 measures will remain in effect to maintain vigilance and prevent any deterioration in the air quality.

Stage 3 Measures and Their Impact

Stage 3 of the GRAP includes several severe restrictions aimed at curbing high levels of pollution. These measures include a ban on non-essential construction work in the private sector, as well as the shift to hybrid classes for students up to grade 5, allowing parents and students the option to attend online classes if available.

Additionally, Stage 3 limits the use of BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel vehicles in Delhi, along with non-essential diesel-operated medium goods vehicles with BS-IV or older emission standards. These restrictions had been enforced due to the AQI exceeding 350, with further escalation leading to Stage IV measures.

    Continued Vigilance

Despite the revocation of Stage 3 measures, CAQM stated that they will continue to monitor the air quality closely. “We are taking every precaution to ensure AQI levels do not deteriorate. Vigilance and strict implementation of Stage I and II measures will continue,” the commission added.

Stage 1 and Stage 2 measures, which remain in effect, include steps such as the regulation of industrial emissions and restrictions on the burning of stubble and waste.

    Looking Ahead

With the air quality improving and further rain forecasts, Delhi residents may see a significant reduction in pollution levels over the coming days. However, authorities continue to focus on keeping pollution in check through sustained efforts and monitoring.
