In a bizarre turn of events, a Dubai-based labourer, Deepak, was left heartbroken after his bride-to-be, Manpreet Kaur, whom he met on Instagram, vanished on their wedding day. The highly anticipated nuptials turned into a distressing ordeal for the groom and his 150-member baraat.
Deepak, 24, had returned to Punjab from Dubai a month ago, preparing to marry Manpreet, a lawyer from Moga with whom he had been in a three-year online relationship. On Friday, he traveled from his village Mandiali in Jalandhar district to Moga in a flower-decorated car, accompanied by a grand baraat as requested by the bride’s family.
The couple had arranged their marriage after discussions between their families, finalizing December 6 as the wedding date. However, upon reaching Moga, the groom’s party found no sign of Manpreet or the wedding venue.
Initially, Manpreet answered Deepak’s calls, assuring him that relatives would soon arrive to escort the baraat to the venue. Hours passed, and her phone was eventually switched off. By 5 p.m., neither the bride nor her family showed up, leaving the baraat stranded.
Confused and distraught, Deepak and his family filed a police complaint against Manpreet and her family. In his statement, Deepak revealed that he had never met Manpreet in person, only interacting with her through Instagram and phone calls. She had claimed to work as a lawyer in Ferozepur with a stable income and provided details about the venue, identified as “Rose Garden Palace,” which was later found to be nonexistent.
Local authorities are investigating the incident, which has left the groom and his family grappling with disappointment and unanswered questions. Meanwhile, the groom has expressed his anguish, calling it a betrayal of trust built over years of online interaction.
This unusual incident serves as a cautionary tale for those engaging in virtual relationships, emphasizing the importance of verifying details before making life-altering commitments.
