The Election Commission (EC) has issued a show cause notice to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his remarks targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi during an election rally in Rajasthan’s Barmer. The notice comes in response to a complaint filed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), alleging Gandhi’s comments were unbecoming of a senior leader and amounted to character assassination.
In the statement released by the poll panel, it cited the BJP’s complaint, highlighting Gandhi’s comparison of the Prime Minister to a ‘jaibkatra’ (pickpocket) and his use of the word ‘panauti’. Additionally, the alleged claim of granting waivers of ₹14,00,000 crore over nine years was challenged by the BJP as lacking factual support.
Gandhi has been summoned to appear before the Election Commission on November 25 to address the allegations made against him. At the heart of the controversy are remarks made by Gandhi during the rally where he accused PM Modi of distracting the public through television appearances while entities like Adani allegedly siphon off funds.
The BJP’s complaint characterized Gandhi’s remarks as not just a personal attack but also as an attempt to tarnish the reputation of the Prime Minister, intending to mislead the public.
The Election Commission’s move to issue a show cause notice underscores the heightened sensitivity surrounding political discourse, especially in the run-up to elections. Such exchanges often fuel contentious debates and draw regulatory attention from authorities like the EC to maintain the decorum of political discourse.
The issue has sparked a heated debate between the Congress and the BJP, with both parties standing firm on their positions. The response from Rahul Gandhi regarding the show cause notice is highly anticipated as it could potentially influence the trajectory of this electoral discourse.
