The Ethics Committee’s report, proposing the expulsion of Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra in connection with a “cash-for-query” case, is expected to be presented in the Lok Sabha on Friday, as confirmed by parliamentary sources. Despite being initially slated for discussion on December 4, the report was not tabled during that session.
Opposition members are advocating for a thorough discussion on the recommendations before any decision regarding Moitra’s fate is made. Danish Ali, BSP MP, stressed the necessity of a comprehensive debate, highlighting concerns about the swift adoption of the draft within a mere two-and-a-half minutes.
The committee, chaired by Vinod Kumar Sonkar, reached a consensus during a November 9 meeting, endorsing Moitra’s expulsion from the Lok Sabha concerning the “cash-for-query” allegations. The report received approval from six panel members, including Congress MP Preneet Kaur, who had previously faced suspension from the party. However, four opposition members of the panel issued dissenting opinions.
Criticism surfaced among opposition ranks, labeling the report as a “fixed match.” They contended that the complaint, lodged by BJP Lok Sabha member Nishikant Dubey and reviewed by the panel, lacked substantiating evidence. Moitra’s potential expulsion depends on the House voting in favor of the panel’s recommendation.
The Winter Session of Parliament commenced on Monday and is scheduled to continue until December 22, setting the stage for potential deliberations and decisions regarding Moitra’s status within the Lok Sabha. The impending tabling of the Ethics Committee’s report underscores the anticipated discussions and decisions that could shape the ongoing session’s proceedings.
