A tragic accident on the Pune-Nashik National Highway claimed the life of 19-year-old Om Bhalerao after an SUV driven by Mayur Mohite, nephew of Maharashtra MLA Dilip Mohite Patil, collided head-on with his bike. The incident occurred last night and has led to the arrest of Mayur Mohite.
Dilip Mohite Patil represents the Khed Alandi Assembly segment in Pune district and is associated with the Ajit Pawar faction of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). According to police reports, the Toyota Fortuner SUV driven by Mayur Mohite was traveling on the wrong side of the road when it struck the bike. A case has been registered, and a thorough investigation is underway.
In a statement following the accident, MLA Dilip Mohite Patil emphasized that his nephew did not flee the scene and was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision.
This incident has once again highlighted the issue of reckless driving in Pune. Last month, another fatal accident involving a speeding Porsche resulted in the deaths of two 24-year-old software engineers. The Porsche was allegedly driven by the 17-year-old son of a prominent realtor, who was intoxicated at the time. The teenager was initially released on bail within 15 hours, which caused national outrage and led the Juvenile Justice Board to modify its order, sending him to an observation home. Further investigations revealed attempts by the teenager’s family to cover up the incident, resulting in several arrests.
