In a devastating incident near Unhani village in Haryana’s Mahendragarh district, a school bus carrying 30 children overturned, resulting in the deaths of six children and leaving 13 others injured. The accident occurred on Thursday morning despite the school being closed for Eid-ul-Fitr.
The school bus, belonging to GL Public School in Kanina, was involved in the accident after the driver attempted to overtake another vehicle, according to police officials. Shockingly, official records revealed that the bus’s fitness certificate had expired six years ago in 2018.
The injured students were promptly rushed to various hospitals in Mahendergarh and Narnaul for medical treatment. Among them, two children remain in critical condition and are undergoing intensive care.
Eyewitnesses alleged that the bus driver was intoxicated at the time of the accident. Mahendergarh Superintendent of Police (SP) Arsh Verma stated that a medical examination is being conducted to confirm this claim. Investigations are also ongoing regarding the responsibility of the school authorities in maintaining the bus’s safety standards.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed his condolences over the tragic incident, extending support to the bereaved families and ensuring that the local administration is providing assistance to the injured children.
Haryana’s education minister, Seema Trikha, has initiated an investigation into the matter, instructing the deputy commissioner and Mahendergarh SP to visit the hospitals where the injured students are receiving treatment. The district collector, Monika Gupta, has assured that strict action will be taken against both the school authorities and the bus driver, holding them accountable for the unfortunate accident.
