Manipur Completes First Phase of Deportation of Illegal Immigrants from Myanmar

In a significant development, Manipur has successfully completed the first phase of deporting illegal immigrants from Myanmar, as announced by state Chief Minister N Biren Singh. The deportation process saw 38 individuals exiting the country via the border town of Moreh, marking a crucial step in addressing concerns related to illegal immigration and national security.

The chief minister shared this news on social media platform X, accompanied by photographs of the formal deportation ceremony. He emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring the security of borders and the country by taking decisive action against illegal immigration.

Singh highlighted the issue of unnatural growth in villages attributed to illegal immigration, citing a report that identified 996 new villages with an illegal immigrant population. He underscored the threat posed to indigenous communities and national security by such developments, calling for stringent measures to address the issue.

The deportation process involved the identification of illegal immigrants and the recording of biometric data to facilitate efficient handling of the situation. The chief minister also mentioned the repatriation of one Indian national during the deportation process, further emphasizing the comprehensive approach taken by the state government.

This move comes in response to growing concerns over the impact of illegal immigration on the demography and environment of Manipur. Singh expressed grave concerns about the emergence of new villages and the destruction of forest cover due to the influx of illegal immigrants, particularly from Myanmar.

During a recent state assembly session, Singh disclosed that 6,746 illegal Myanmarese individuals were detected in Manipur from May 3 last year to February 27 this year. This underscores the magnitude of the challenge faced by the state and the urgency of addressing illegal immigration issues effectively.
