In a significant political development, Preneet Kaur, a suspended Congress Member of Parliament and the wife of former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, has officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), adding momentum to the party’s preparations for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Ms. Kaur, who represents the Patiala constituency, is expected to contest from the same seat under the BJP banner in the forthcoming polls.
The decision comes as the BJP continues its efforts to bolster its electoral prospects, especially in Punjab, ahead of the parliamentary elections. Preneet Kaur’s induction into the BJP fold was formalized on Thursday in the presence of National General Secretaries Vinod Tawde and Tarun Chugh, as well as Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar, who had previously been associated with the Congress.
Ms. Kaur’s suspension from the Congress party last year, citing “anti-party activities” allegedly in favor of the BJP, paved the way for her transition to the saffron party. Speaking on her decision to join the BJP, she expressed admiration for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his transformative policies, emphasizing the need to collectively advance the nation’s development agenda.
Addressing the media, Vinod Tawde highlighted Ms. Kaur’s parliamentary experience and asserted that her inclusion would fortify the BJP’s presence in Punjab. He underscored the growing resonance of the BJP among the people of Punjab and emphasized that the state’s development aligned with PM Modi’s vision would receive a significant boost with Ms. Kaur’s participation.
Responding to queries about her departure from the Congress, Ms. Kaur refrained from delving into the past but expressed optimism about her future endeavors with the BJP. Notably, Ms. Kaur has secured victory in the Patiala constituency four times, including in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, underscoring her political significance in the region.
While her move to the BJP is poised to strengthen the party’s electoral prospects in Punjab, it represents a setback for the Congress, which had won a significant number of Lok Sabha seats in the state in the previous elections. With the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) emerging as a formidable contender in Punjab’s political landscape, the BJP’s alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal further underscores the evolving dynamics ahead of the polls.
As political alliances and strategies take shape in Punjab, Ms. Kaur’s decision to join the BJP signals a significant shift in the state’s political landscape, setting the stage for an intense electoral contest in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
