Former Indian Ambassador to US Taranjit Singh Sandhu Joins BJP Ahead of Lok Sabha Elections

In a significant political development, former Indian Ambassador to the United States Taranjit Singh Sandhu has joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Delhi, setting the stage for his potential role in the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections 2024.

Taranjit Singh Sandhu, hailing from Punjab’s Amritsar, officially joined the BJP in a ceremony attended by BJP National Secretary Manjinder Singh Sirsa and Tarun Chug. Sandhu expressed his admiration for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s development-focused leadership and emphasized the need for development to reach his hometown, Amritsar.

During the ceremony, Sandhu highlighted his close association with PM Modi’s leadership, particularly in strengthening India’s relations with the United States and Sri Lanka. He stressed the importance of development and opportunities for Amritsar, stating, “I am very affectionate towards my hometown, Amritsar, which has immense potential.”

Sandhu’s nomination as a Lok Sabha candidate will be decided by the party, indicating a potential entry into active politics following his retirement as the Indian envoy to the US on February 1.

Known for his extensive experience in diplomatic affairs, Sandhu served as the Indian Ambassador to the US from February 2020, playing a crucial role in bilateral engagements and high-level visits, including then-President Donald Trump’s India visit.

Sandhu’s career spans various diplomatic roles, including Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of India in Washington, DC, and First Secretary (Political) responsible for liaison with the United States Congress. He also served as the High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka.

The political landscape in Punjab ahead of the Lok Sabha elections remains dynamic, with both the BJP and Congress yet to announce candidates for several seats. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has named candidates for eight seats, including prominent figures from Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s cabinet.

The Lok Sabha elections in Punjab are scheduled for June 1, 2024, with parties gearing up for a competitive electoral contest. The nationwide elections for 543 Lok Sabha seats will be held from April 19 to June 1, culminating in the counting of votes on June 4.
