In a tragic incident following a cloudburst in Himachal Pradesh, 10 students from the Government Senior Secondary School in Samej village near Shimla have been reported missing. The cloudburst, which occurred on Wednesday night, triggered flash floods that led to widespread destruction in the region.
Among the missing students are four promising athletes: two state-level volleyball players and two district-level badminton shuttlers. Their disappearance is especially concerning given their potential and the impact their loss could have on the local sports community.
The flash floods caused significant damage across Kullu, Mandi, and Shimla districts. Over sixty houses were destroyed, and several villages have been severely impacted. The floods have rendered numerous areas inaccessible, complicating rescue and relief efforts.
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu visited the affected village and met with students and locals. During his visit, he was urged to provide assistance in locating the missing students.
The ongoing relief and rescue operations are being led by state authorities, with a focus on retrieving those missing and restoring connectivity in the flood-affected areas. Himachal Pradesh Minister Vikramaditya Singh has reported that around 50 people are feared dead, though the official number will be confirmed once the rescue operations are completed.
