In a tragic incident on Saturday evening, four sanitary workers, including two women, lost their lives after being run over by the Thiruvananthapuram-bound Kerala Express near the Shoranur Railway station in Palakkad district, Kerala. The accident occurred as the workers were engaged in clearing garbage from the railway track close to the Shoranur bridge, just a few meters from the station.
Officials reported that the train was traveling from Delhi to Kerala when it struck the workers, who were contracted by the Railways for sanitation duties. The impact of the collision was severe enough to throw the workers from the track, resulting in immediate fatalities. While three bodies have been recovered from the incident site, the search continues for the fourth victim, who is feared to have fallen into the Bharathapuzha River during the chaos.
The workers, all hailing from Tamil Nadu, were reportedly unaware of the approaching train, leading to the tragic accident. A Railway Police official stated, “The workers may not have noticed the approaching train, which resulted in the accident, but further investigations are underway to determine the exact circumstances.”
The incident highlights ongoing safety concerns regarding workers on railway tracks, prompting calls for enhanced protocols to protect those clearing debris and conducting maintenance. As investigations unfold, the Railway Police are working diligently to piece together the events leading up to this unfortunate loss of life.
