Gurugram Man Fined ₹1,000 for Sitting Drunk in Car Despite Not Driving

A Reddit user recently shared his experience of being fined ₹1,000 by the police despite not driving under the influence. The man claimed that he was seated in the back of his car while his sober driver was behind the wheel when the police pulled them over.

In a post titled “Drinking and driving in Gurgaon… my car got pulled over by the cops last night”, the user narrated the incident, stating, “I was completely sozzled… BUT I was NOT driving.” He explained that his personal driver, who was completely sober, was driving him home from a party.

According to his claims, the police checked the car for open alcohol containers but found none. Despite this, they still fined him ₹1,000 for being an intoxicated passenger. He wrote, “They checked the car several times, and my driver was fit to drive. Yet, I was made to pay ₹1,000 for being drunk.”

    Viral Reaction on Reddit

The post quickly gained traction on social media, with many users expressing disbelief and outrage.

    • One user commented, “The cops in Gurgaon are not used to encountering responsible people who take a driver after drinking. They probably had no idea what to do and fined you anyway.”
    • Another questioned, “What did they accuse you of? You paid ₹1,000 for what?”
    • A different user claimed a similar experience, saying, “I was drinking a little and was pulled over in Gurgaon. They took a picture of my number plate and phone screen and let me go. I doubt I got any fine online. Who pays for drinking while sitting in the backseat?”
    • Another Redditor remarked, “They extorted you, my man! But thank you for being responsible.”

    What the Law Says

As per Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act, driving under the influence of alcohol or intoxicating substances is an offense punishable by six months in jail and/or a ₹10,000 fine for first-time offenders. Repeat offenders can face two years in jail and/or another ₹10,000 fine. However, the law specifically applies to the driver, not the passengers.
