Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday announced that Guwahati Police has registered an FIR against five YouTubers, including Ranveer Allahbadia and Samay Raina, for allegedly promoting obscenity on the YouTube show India’s Got Latent.
The case has sparked a wider debate on digital content regulation, with the National Commission for Women (NCW) urging the Centre to introduce stricter laws to curb explicit content on OTT platforms and social media streaming sites.
FIR Filed Against YouTubers
Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), CM Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed that Guwahati Police’s Cyber Crime Branch has registered a case (Cyber PS case no. 03/2025) against multiple content creators, including:
- Ranveer Allahbadia
- Samay Raina
- Ashish Chanchlani
- Jaspreet Singh
- Apoorva Makhija
The FIR has been lodged under various sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, the Information Technology (IT) Act, 2000, the Cinematograph Act, 1952, and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986.
Ranveer Allahbadia Apologizes After Backlash
The controversy erupted after Ranveer Allahbadia’s remark about parents and sex on India’s Got Latent went viral, triggering widespread outrage. Facing intense criticism, the YouTuber—who has nearly 16 million followers—apologized, admitting that comedy is not his forte.
India’s Got Latent, hosted by comedian Samay Raina, is known for its provocative content, but this particular episode has raised concerns about the boundaries of humor and free speech on digital platforms.
NCW Demands Stricter Regulations on OTT Content
Amid the controversy, the National Commission for Women (NCW) has urged the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to introduce tighter regulations on explicit content.
In a letter to Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, NCW chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar called for immediate action to prevent online platforms from streaming or allowing inappropriate content.
As the investigation into the FIR progresses, the incident has reignited debates over content moderation, freedom of speech, and legal accountability in India’s digital entertainment industry.
