Heatwave Claims 46 Lives in May Across India, Govt Data Shows

India has witnessed a devastating toll from the heatwave, with government data reporting 46 deaths in May alone due to heatstroke, out of a total of 56 confirmed deaths over the past three months. The highest number of fatalities occurred in Madhya Pradesh, with 14 reported deaths, followed by Maharashtra with 11, Andhra Pradesh with 6, and Rajasthan with 5.

The surge in heat-related illnesses and deaths is part of the National Heat-Related Illnesses and Death Surveillance program, which has recorded 24,849 heatstroke cases since March 1, with a staggering 19,189 cases reported in May alone.

The intensity of the heatwave is attributed to several intense heat spells recorded by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). These spells, occurring between April and May, saw temperatures soaring to dangerous levels, especially in regions like Rajasthan where temperatures neared 50 degrees Celsius.

Experts warn that humid heat, particularly prevalent in coastal areas, can have severe health impacts, especially on vulnerable populations such as the elderly, young children, and those with pre-existing health conditions. The combination of high temperatures and humidity has led to not only heat-related illnesses but also cardiovascular deaths, with 605 reported in May linked to the intense heat spells.

There are two types of heat strokes, exertional and non-exertional, both posing serious risks to health. Loss of fluids and electrolytes can burden the heart and lead to organ dysfunction, particularly in individuals with underlying health issues.

Doctors emphasize the importance of preventive measures during heatwaves, including avoiding direct sun exposure, staying hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, and seeking immediate medical attention if symptoms of heatstroke are suspected.
