Hyderabad Cab Drivers to Launch ‘No AC Campaign’ from March 24 Against Unfair Fare Policies

Hyderabad Cab Drivers Launch ‘No AC Campaign’ From March 24 Over Unfair Fares

Hyderabad’s cab drivers, operating under platforms like Ola, Uber, and Rapido, have announced a ‘No AC Campaign’ from March 24, protesting against unfair fare structures imposed by the aggregators. The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers’ Union (TGPWU), which represents these drivers, is leading the movement, demanding a more equitable fare system that aligns with rising fuel and maintenance costs.

    Why Are Drivers Protesting?

The TGPWU has been raising concerns over the disparity between fare structures set by cab aggregators and government-mandated prepaid taxi fares. According to the union, while drivers earn around ₹10-12 per km, the operational cost with AC on is ₹16-18 per km, pushing them into financial losses.

TGPWU President Shaik Salahuddin pointed out that the fare difference between cab aggregators and prepaid taxis is nearly ₹300-400 per ride. Drivers also wait for hours at the airport for return trips and must pay a 30% commission to the aggregators, further reducing their earnings.

    Impact on Passengers

With temperatures soaring, passengers in Hyderabad will struggle with cab drivers refusing to turn on the air conditioner to avoid fuel wastage. The TGPWU has urged customers to consider tipping drivers for AC usage, acknowledging the financial strain on them.

    Further Actions Planned

In addition to the ‘No AC Campaign,’ many drivers are considering surrendering their vehicles to the Road Transport Authority (RTA) as part of their protest. The TGPWU has also called for government intervention to regulate pricing policies for cab aggregators and ensure fair earnings for drivers.

This is not the first time such a protest has taken place—a similar ‘No AC Campaign’ was held in April 2024 with the same demands. The union remains firm in its stance, pushing for a revised fare system that reflects actual expenses and provides just compensation for drivers.
